Our team of dedicated support workers, counsellors and advocates work to support women who are living with violence in their lives. We support women and their children to be safe and make good decisions for their families - we offer a helping hand and the support they need. We also work with people who hurt and are looking for an opportunity to change their patterns of violence and live in peace with their family.
The WRRC is seeking a strong woman-centred Recreation Coordinator Summer Student for a part-time, 8 week contract opportunity.
Summary: Working 30 hours/week, this role will support the recreational needs of women and children served by the Program team. As this position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs 2014, summer students must be under the age of 30 and returning to full-time education in the fall of 2014.
Reporting Relationship: This position reports to the Program Manager.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide positive role modelling to children and youth engaged in WRRC services
- Provide structured recreation time within the Residential Program, providing women and children with opportunities to increase self-esteem and build leadership skills
- Develop, implement, and evaluate a summer recreation program accessing community support and resources as appropriate
- Demonstrate and advocate for safety to women and children engaged in recreational programming
- Assist in the preparation and support of group programming
- Participate in case planning as appropriate
- Provide on-going support to the Program team
- Special projects as required
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent communication and listening skills
- Excellent assessment skills
- Excellent conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Good working knowledge of computer office technology and applications
- Clear current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision
- Student under the age of 30 returning to full-time education in the fall 2014
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current Post-Secondary education in Recreation, Recreation Leadership, Therapeutic Recreation, CYW or related field
- Skills required: Critical thinking, thorough assessment and program intake, effective and proactive safety and risk assessment, clear and effective communication, good knowledge of community referral sources, ability to prioritize
Physical Requirements: This position will require engaging with women, children, and youth in play-based activities appropriate to age, physical, social and developmental ability. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Hours of Work: This position will require regular daytime working hours and may include evening and weekend hours.
