INTAKE & RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT SUMMER STUDENT (WOMEN'S RURAL RESOURCE CENTRE)

The Women's Rural Resource Centre of Strathroy and Area ("WRRC") is a non-profit agency whose mandate is to support women and children whose lives have been affected by woman abuse.  We provide counselling, transition support, advocacy, residential services, public education, advocacy, and second stage housing.

Our team of dedicated support workers, counsellors and advocates work to support women who are living with violence in their lives.  We support women and their children to be safe and make good decisions for their families - we offer a helping hand and the support they need.  We also work with people who hurt and are looking for an opportunity to change their patterns of violence and live in peace with their family.

The WRRC is seeking a strong woman-centred Intake & Residential Support Summer Student for a part-time, 8 week contract opportunity.

Summary:  Working 30 hours/week, this role will support the staff team in meeting the needs of women seeking services at WRRC.  As this position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs 2014, summer students must be under the age of 30 and returning to full-time education in the fall 2014.

Reporting Relationship:  This position reports to the Program Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Complete program intake sessions with women seeking services and program support at WRRC and make internal and collaborative agency referrals as appropriate
  • Provide crisis support to women seeking services and program support at WRRC
  • Provide practical systems navigation support for women in the following areas:  transportation; legal; housing; financial; employment; life skills development
  • Provide safety planning and risk assessment to women accessing transition supports as appropriate; in employment situations, housing, school safety etc.
  • Demonstrate and advocate for safety to women accessing services, supporting the woman's goals for herself
  • Participate in case planning as appropriate
  • Assist in the preparation and support of group programming
  • Provide ongoing support to the Residential Program
  • Special projects as required
Required Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Good working knowledge of computer office technology and applications
  • Clear current Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision
  • Student under the age of 30 returning to full-time education in the fall 2013
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current Post-Secondary education in Social Work, Social Service Worker, or related field
  • Skills required:  Critical thinking, thorough assessment and program intake, effective and proactive safety and risk assessment, clear and effective communication, good knowledge of community referral sources, ability to prioritize
Physical Requirements:  This position will require advocating and working with women in a residential setting. Must have the ability to lift 25 lbs.

Hours of Work:  This position will require regular daytime working hours and may include evening hours.
